The southern Catalan Sea is located in the north-western Mediterranean Sea, in the Catalano-Balearic basin. It is associated with a wide continental shelf influenced by the Ebro River Delta, where soft bottom sediments predominate, with mainly mud and mud-sandy areas. Most of the data presented in this study refers to that from the continental shelf and upper slope, covering a total area of soft bottom sediments of 5000 km2. Biological data mainly comes from the Institute of Marine Science located in Barcelona, Spain (ICM-CSIC, www.icm.csic.es, see data sources).
