Mauritanian EEZ - Geographic Area

The Mauritanian ecosystem (Atlantic Ocean) is among the most productive in the world, extending from 16° 04’N to 20° 36’N, along nearly 720 km of coastline with an exclusive 200 mile economic zone of approximately 234000 km2. The ecosystem covers 34000 km2 of continental shelf 20 to 30 miles in width, reaching widths of 40 to 60 miles in the south of Cape Timiris. The large nature reserve Arguin Bank Park is subject to several climatic factors and includes different geomorphological features, making the Mauritanian system an exceptional, highly productive coastal ecosystem characterized by high biodiversity and productive marine resources. While moving away from coasts towards the broad one, the sediment changes from the coast offshore, from sands to muddy sands, sandy vases of fine rock remains and coarse sands in the vicinities of outcrops rock. The continental shelf is characterized by underwater rocky valleys 10 to 400 meters in depth.
