Humboldt (Northern) - Geographic Area

The Humboldt Current Large Marine Ecosystem (HCLME) is an upwelling system that ranges from 5° to 40°S and is shared by Peru and Chile. In its extension two main upwelling regions have been identified, one off Peru and the other off north-central Chile centered at about 30°S. The boundary between them lies at about 20°S (Bakun and Parrish, 1982). According to estimates of primary productivity, chlorophyll biomass, nutrient concentration and hydrology, the Peruvian Coastal Upwelling system is considered a subsystem of this major eastern biogeographic region (HCLME), extending from 4° to 15°S and from 0 to 250 km offshore (Pennington et al., 2006). However, for scientific and fisheries management purposes, the Northern Humboldt Ecosystem extends from the Ecuador-Peru to the Peru-Chile border and from 0 to 360 km offshore.
