The seas to the west of Scotland are considered largely as ICES area VIa. The area extends between 55-60°N from the Scottish Coast to the 200 meter depth profile and includes the many smaller seas such as the Hebrides, the Firth of Lorn, the Sound of Jura and the Firth of Clyde. It also extends around the top part of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland for a total area of 110,000km2. In comparison to the North Sea, the fishing grounds, especially for demersal fisheries, to the west of Scotland are of a much smaller extent due to a rougher terrain and deeper waters.
