Prince Edward Islands - Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries

The Patagonian Toothfish fishery is currently assessed and managed using a single species approach and an operating model procedure has been put forward (Brandao et al. 2002; Brandao and Butterworth 2009). A number of EAF related permit conditions are in place including bycatch management (finfish, sharks and seabirds) as well as habitat management. An Ecological Risk Assessment has been undertaken for the fishery (Petersen & Mullins, WWF Report, 2010), which identifies EAF issues of top priority, providing a roadmap for addressing target stock, general ecosystem, social, economic and governance issues. A Marine Protected Area (MPA) has been declared at the islands, following recommendations made from a compilation of biological data in a spatially explicit format (Lombard et al. 2007).
