Baltic Sea (Central) - Geographic area

The Baltic Sea can be separated into three macroregions – the Transition Area, Large Gulfs and the Baltic Proper (Ojaveer and Kalejs 2008). The Baltic Proper (here also named as the Central Baltic Sea, CBS) represents the largest sub-region of the Baltic Sea. It is located between 54°- 60.5° N latitude and 15-23° E longitude. The Central Baltic Sea comprises three deep basins: the Bornholm Basin, Gdansk Deep, and Gotland Basin, with a maximum water depth in the western Gotland Deep of 459 m. In addition to the scientific considerations, CBS also represents the major fisheries management area by hosting the eastern Baltic cod population, majority of the sprat stock and the open sea herring stock. CBS encompasses ICES statistical rectangles (SD) 25-29.
